What does a cabinet colour change involve?

A cabinet colour change repaints existing kitchen cabinetry in a new colour using the same preparation and spray process as full cabinet painting. Any paint brand code can be colour-matched. In Ontario it typically costs $3,500 to $7,000 CAD and takes three to four working days, with a sprayed sample door approved before the full kitchen is committed.

Why choose this service

What cabinet colour change gets you.

01

Any colour, any brand

Bring a Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams or Farrow & Ball code and it gets matched into a cabinet-grade coating. You are not limited to a manufacturer’s cabinet range.

02

A sprayed sample before you commit

You approve a real sprayed door in your own kitchen light, not a two-inch paper chip under a showroom bulb.

03

Two-tone without two invoices

Darker lowers and lighter uppers, or an island in a contrast colour, are quoted as part of the same job.

04

The biggest visual change per dollar

No other single renovation decision changes how a kitchen feels this much for this little.

05

Colour formula kept on file

Your exact formula is recorded, so touch-ups years later match rather than approximate.

06

Payment secured until sign-off

Held under our secure payment terms and released when you confirm the finished kitchen.

The cheapest way to change how a kitchen feels

Nothing changes a kitchen faster than colour, and nothing else in a renovation delivers that much visual change for that little money. Layout stays. Appliances stay. Counters stay. Only the colour moves, and the room reads completely differently.

Getting the colour right in an Ontario house

Light matters more here than most people account for. Ontario gets short, grey, low-angle winter daylight for four months of the year, and a colour chosen in July can look markedly colder and flatter in January. Cool greys that felt crisp in summer often read blue and clinical by February.

That is why every colour change starts with a sprayed sample door rather than a paint chip. You live with the actual finish, in your actual kitchen, under your actual lighting, before committing the whole room to it.

Two-tone, and when it works

Darker lowers with lighter uppers has been the dominant request across the GTA for several years. It works well in kitchens with reasonable ceiling height and a decent run of upper cabinets. It works poorly in small condo kitchens, where splitting the colour horizontally chops an already small room in half. In tighter Toronto kitchens, a single lighter colour throughout usually reads larger and calmer.

The process

Step by step, start to sign-off.

STEP 01

Colour consultation

Your specialist looks at your counters, flooring, backsplash and the direction your windows face, then narrows the options to a shortlist that will actually work in the room.

STEP 02

Sample door sprayed

One door is sprayed in the shortlisted colour and left with you. Look at it morning, afternoon and under artificial light before deciding.

STEP 03

Removal and preparation

Doors labelled and removed, kitchen masked and contained, everything degreased and scuff-sanded.

STEP 04

Priming

Primer matched to the material and to the colour shift. Going dramatically lighter over a dark stain needs more blocking than going darker.

STEP 05

Colour coats

Two sprayed coats with a proper cure between. Deep colours sometimes need a third for full opacity, which is included rather than charged as an extra.

STEP 06

Rehang and sign-off

Doors returned to their labelled positions, hardware refitted, site cleaned, walkthrough completed before payment releases.

They sprayed one door in the colour I was considering and left it with us for a week. Good thing, because it looked completely different in January light than it did on the chip. We changed the colour and got it right.

Questions

Cabinet Colour Change: common questions

Can I go from dark cabinets to white?

Yes, and it is one of the most requested changes in the GTA. Going dramatically lighter needs a stain-blocking primer, sometimes two coats of it, because tannins in oak and cherry will bleed yellow-brown through a white topcoat otherwise. Expect it to sit at the upper end of the price range for that reason.

What is the most popular cabinet colour in Ontario right now?

Warm whites and soft greiges remain the volume choice, especially for homeowners thinking about resale. The fastest-growing request is deep green or charcoal on lower cabinets paired with a warm white above. Pure cool greys have declined noticeably as a first choice.

How do I pick a colour that will not date?

Anchor to the things you are not changing. Your counters, backsplash and flooring have undertones, and a cabinet colour that fights them will look wrong regardless of how current it is. Warm neutrals date more slowly than saturated trend colours, and a sample door in your own light will tell you more than any online palette.

Does a colour change cost the same as painting?

Broadly yes, at $3,500 to $7,000 CAD. Large colour shifts, particularly dark-to-light, can add cost because of extra primer coats. Deep saturated colours may need a third coat for full coverage, which your quote will state up front.

Can you match a colour from a photo?

Not accurately. Photographs shift colour depending on camera, screen and lighting. Bring a physical sample, a fan deck chip or a paint code and it can be matched precisely. A photo is useful for direction but never for final matching.

Will the new colour look the same in winter?

It will look different, and this catches people out. Ontario winter daylight is shorter, lower and greyer, which pulls cool colours toward blue and flattens contrast. This is exactly why sample doors are left with you for several days rather than approved on the spot.

Can I change just the island?

Yes. Islands in a contrast colour are a common request and cost considerably less than a full kitchen since it is a fraction of the surface area. It is also a low-risk way to test a bolder colour.

Do the cabinet interiors get painted too?

Not by default. Interiors are quoted separately because they roughly double the surface area. Most people skip them unless a dark dated interior would be visible against a much lighter new exterior.
